“[Capuçon is] the rare performer who can bring such ease and refinement to this music, while still giving everything he plays a sense of dramatic urgency.” San Francisco Chronicle

“[Wang] can create the startling juxtaposition of a flashy young star…while evoking the legendary piano gods of old playing warhorse concertos.” – Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times

Extraordinary French cellist Gautier Capuçon and piano dynamo Yuja Wang double down in a high-stakes program imbued with youthful vigor and emotional fervor. The duo’s performance features two electrifying Chopin works: the highly entertaining and energetic Polonaise brillante, and the Cello Sonata, which demands its players match compelling color and artistry with astonishing dexterity at top speed. Promising consummate technical skill, the evening also includes Belgian-French composer César Franck’s Sonata in G minor, widely considered to be one of the most reverberant and deeply felt sonatas ever written.

Chopin: Polonaise brillante in C Major, op. 3
Franck: Sonata in A Major
Chopin: Sonata in G minor, op. 65

Presented in association with the UCSB Department of Music
