Santa Barbara Debut Sacred Choral Music and Folk Songs “It was the male Ensemble Basiani from the Republic of Georgia, singing two sets of Georgian polyphony descended from an ancient tradition, that stole the main show.” The New York Times Listening to ancient Georgian choral music live is a rare and thrilling experience for Western audiences. Restless polyphonic harmonies combine with shifts in mood to create a distinctive language. It is emotive, transporting music of seemingly boundless variety and invention. The acclaimed all-male members of Ensemble Basiani of Georgia are the inheritors of an incomparable artistic legacy, as well as its leading exponents. Part of the Holy Trinity Cathedral choir in Tbilisi, they painstakingly research and recreate the uncanny sounds of a distant era. Their spellbinding program melds sacred and folk music, from hymns to the Virgin to love songs, drawn from throughout Georgia, in a unique introduction to one of the oldest and greatest singing traditions.
