2010/2011 Lectures

Alex Ross (2010 Season)

Wed, Oct 20, 2010 @ 8:00 PM, Campbell Hall

An Evening with The New Yorker Music Critic Alex Ross “Ross is a supremely gifted writer who brings together the political and technological richness of the world inside the magic circle of the concert hall, so that each illuminates the other.” Time New Yorker music critic Alex Ross is the author of The Rest Is Noise, an astonishing history of the 20th century as told through its music. A New York Times Top 10 Book, Noise also won a National Book Critics Circle Award and a Guardian First Book Award, and was a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. Ross will deliver an audio-rich lecture based on a chapter of his new book, Listen to This, titled "Chacona, Lamento, Walking Blues: Bass Lines of Music History" – an extraordinary tale of the interconnectedness of musical language and the universality of human emotion. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
